Queer-Friendly Gun Clubs, Ranges and First Lessons in Austin

We couldn’t find an LGBTQ+ gun club that meets in Austin on a public schedule. Not in October 2026, anyway. The nearest Pink Pistols chapter is in San Antonio, and as far as we know, Austin’s own queer gun club hasn’t met regularly since the pandemic.

That doesn’t leave you without options. You can get a free first lesson from a queer-friendly volunteer, shoot at ranges where queer Austinites say they’ve been treated fine, or help start the group this city is missing.

Groups and a Free First Lesson

Operation Blazing Sword

If you’ve never held a gun and don’t want to walk into a gun store alone, start here. Operation Blazing Sword says it helps “everyone, but especially queer people, become responsible firearm owners.” Its volunteer educators teach “the basics of firearm safety, operation and ownership for no cost and without judgement for your race, gender, sexual orientation, biology, faith, or manner of dress.”

Its instructor map lists volunteers by city. Search for Austin and click a pin for each instructor’s name and contact details. They chose to be listed there, so that’s where to find them.

Pink Pistols

Pink Pistols is the national LGBTQ+ shooting group, and Operation Blazing Sword is its parent organization. Its chapter list, updated April 6, 2026, shows three active chapters in Texas: Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, which is new. There’s no Austin chapter.

A San Antonio range day is a drive down I-35. To start a chapter in Austin, Pink Pistols lists four steps, and our guide to starting a queer group when privacy matters covers them along with the privacy side.

Austin Trigger Warning

Austin Trigger Warning is a queer gun club with its own site. As far as we know, it hasn’t met regularly since the pandemic.

If you’d like to be put in touch, write us through the contact page and we’ll pass your message along.

A Liberal Gun Owners Meetup

This one isn’t queer-specific. In October 2026, a group from Reddit’s r/liberalgunowners started meeting at Range USA in Round Rock. The organizer posted that they’d like to meet “every 3 weeks at different locations in the area.” It’s informal, so check the subreddit for the next date.

Ranges and Classes Queer Austinites Recommend

None of these ranges or instructors says anything about LGBTQ+ customers on its own website. They’re here because queer and liberal Austinites named them in Reddit threads we read ourselves, and we’ve dated each report. These are other people’s experiences, not ours.

The Range at Austin

A big indoor range on the I-35 frontage road near Slaughter Lane. It says it’s built for “the seasoned Texas shooter and curious beginners,” and lists training classes on its site.

In a March 2025 r/Austin thread asking for a gun safety class “for libs,” the poster’s summary of the answers was “The Range in south Austin and Karl Rehn / KR Training.” Not every report is spotless. In a 2023 thread, one shooter who took a handgun license class there said a counter employee brought up politics on one visit.

  • Where: 8301 S IH-35 Frontage Rd, Austin 78744. 737-802-3700
  • Hours, as posted: public hours Monday to Sunday, 10 AM to 9 PM

Range USA Round Rock

An indoor range in Round Rock, with Basic Handgun, Texas handgun license and private lessons on its class list. In an April 2023 thread asking for “LGBT friendly” shops, one regular wrote, “I frequent with a rainbow hat and a fanny pack and no one has said a word.” Another called it “Very corporate.”

Shady Oaks Gun Range

An indoor range in Cedar Park with handgun license classes and private lessons. Two threads, two years apart, say the same thing. In November 2023: “I’ve seen LGBTQIA+ customers treated with respect and courtesy,” and staff are “very welcoming and helpful with new shooters.” In January 2026, a beginner who took the handgun license course there wrote, “I have seen multiple POC, outwardly LGBTQ+ folks, and women at the range.”

  • Where: 3100 Woodall Drive, Cedar Park 78613. 512-394-7734
  • Hours: the hours on its site are marked “Updated June 2022,” so call first

Lone Star Gun Range

An outdoor range in Lockhart, south of Austin, with a training academy. Its gun rentals include a lesson on how to handle and fire the gun. The 2025 r/Austin thread named it as the outdoor option.

  • Where: 3795 Dry Creek Rd, Lockhart 78644. 512-801-2624 (call or text)

KR Training

A training school run by Karl Rehn, with classes at its own A-Zone Range. It was the most recommended name in the 2025 r/Austin thread. One commenter who has taken his classes for years wrote that “politics were never brought up.” Its schedule lists a Basic Pistol class for $100. The site doesn’t post the range’s street address on its home page, so ask when you register.

Central Texas Gun Works

A small South Austin shop that teaches classes and handles transfers. It doesn’t have a range. Its site lists a “3-4 hour beginner course covering safety, Texas law, firearm operation, fundamentals,” plus handgun license classes. Reddit opinion is mixed: a 2023 commenter liked it but said people complained about how long special orders take.

  • Where: 1707 Fort View Rd, Suite A, Austin 78704. 512-731-3585
  • Hours, as posted: Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM. Sunday, 10 AM to 1 PM

Before You Go

Range USA’s range rules are typical, and worth reading before your first visit anywhere:

  • The four safety rules. Treat every gun as if it’s loaded, keep it pointed downrange, keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot, and know your target and what’s beyond it
  • Eye and ear protection, every time. Ranges rent or sell both
  • ID. Range USA asks every shooter over 18 for a valid state ID or a US passport
  • Going alone the first time? Range USA won’t rent a gun to a first-time visitor shooting alone. Bring a friend, or book a class or lesson
  • Clothes. Closed-toe shoes, and no low-cut shirts. Hot brass goes where it wants

Before you book, ask whether you can take a private lesson instead of a group class. Ask whether the instructor will use your name and pronouns. If it matters to you, ask about a single-stall restroom.

Texas Law, From DPS

This isn’t legal advice. Each line comes from the Texas Department of Public Safety, which runs handgun licensing.

  • Since September 1, 2021, Texas law has allowed adults 21 and older who can legally have a firearm to carry a handgun without a license, according to DPS’s page on the 2021 legislative session
  • Property owners can still post signs that bar people without a license from carrying a handgun, and people without a license can’t bring one onto school premises
  • The state handgun license still exists. DPS lists what it adds, including carrying a handgun in states that recognize the Texas license and on university campuses
  • If you’re 18 to 20, read question 9 of DPS’s eligibility FAQ. After a federal court ruling, DPS says it no longer denies a handgun license application only because the applicant is 18 to 20

We’re Looking for an Organizer

People in Austin want a monthly queer range day. What’s missing is one person to put it on the calendar and keep it going.

If that could be you, write us. We’ll help with the rest: picking a range, a private way for people to sign up, a safety briefing, and pointing people your way from this page. Monthly is plenty. Tell us through the contact form.

Two Ways to Help This Page

Know an LGBTQ+ friendly range or instructor? Write us with the name and where we can see it: their site, a booking page, or a public post. We check before we list.

Want to start a queer shooting, hunting or fishing group, or already run one? We’ll put up a page for it. Send the group’s name if it has one, what you want to do, how people meet or connect (a Facebook group, a group chat, a range day), and the text you’d like on the page. You write it, we publish it and point people your way. A first name or a pseudonym is fine.

Both go through our contact form.

Last checked: October 2026. Group and business details read from each organization’s own website on October 13, 2026. Reddit threads read the same day; quotes are community reports, dated, and we don’t publish usernames. Texas law from DPS pages read the same day. We didn’t visit these ranges or take these classes.
