How we checked: A group is here only if its own page or official listing shows when it meets. We didn’t attend any of them

How we check every guide, and what we won’t list: How We Choose
If you want to make friends in Austin as a queer adult, the plan is unexciting: pick one thing that meets every week or every month, and keep going back. A big night out is fun, but you meet a different crowd every time. A Tuesday run or a monthly game night puts you in a room with the same people again and again.
Below are groups that post when they meet on their own pages, sorted by what you’d want to do, with costs where the organizer lists them. Each section links to our fuller guide. If you’re a gay or bi man looking for a date, our gay dating guide is the better page, and for one-off outings, see things to do beyond the bars.
Why the Same People Every Week
A 2018 study by Jeffrey Hall at the University of Kansas estimated that it takes about 50 hours together to go from acquaintance to casual friend, and more than 200 hours to become close friends. The people he surveyed had all recently moved, to a new city or to college. The figures are averages from surveys, not a schedule, and Hall found that hours spent working side by side count for less than time spent hanging out.
By that estimate, a two-hour weekly group gets you to 50 hours in about six months. That’s the case for a weekly group over a monthly one, and for staying for dinner afterward. Hall’s own advice, from the university’s write-up of the study: “You can’t make people spend time with you, but you can invite them.”

Choirs
A choir rehearses weekly for months. Both of these audition. Our choirs, theater and film guide has a chorus that doesn’t, plus shows to see.
Austin Gay Men’s Chorus
The business states
You don’t need to be a gay man to join: the chorus says its members cover “a wide spectrum of gender identities and sexualities.” Singers need to fit a tenor, baritone or bass part, and you don’t need to read music. Rehearsals are Mondays, 7 to 9:30 PM, from late August to mid-May. New members paid $120 in dues and fees for spring 2026, with scholarships on request. Spring auditions weren’t open yet when we checked. AGMC auditions

Faith Communities
Our affirming churches guide lists 20 congregations. A few have LGBTQ+ groups that meet outside the service:
- The Pride at First United Methodist, downtown: brunch on the third Sunday of each month after the 11 AM service, “often at a nearby restaurant.” The Pride
- Queer Fellowship at University United Methodist: a meal on the first Friday of each month. Queer Fellowship
- Queer Dharma at the Austin Zen Center, 3014 Washington Square: the fourth Monday at 7 PM, with a short meditation, a prompt and open discussion, then tea and cookies. It’s free. Queer Dharma
If You’re Shy, Sober, Over 40, New or on a Budget
If You’re Shy
Pick something with a built-in task. A book club gives you a topic, a game night gives you a game, and PFLAG will hand you chairs to set up. Front Runners says first-timers don’t need to RSVP, and the Little Gay Book Club says to just show up. Give a group three or four visits before you decide; the first time, you don’t know anybody yet.
If You Don’t Drink
Local Queer runs a monthly non-alcoholic happy hour and a coffee happy hour. Sans Bar at 918 Congress Avenue serves alcohol-free drinks on Fridays from 6 PM to midnight and says “you don’t have to be sober to join us.” The Unbuzzed Club, a sober social group that isn’t LGBTQ+-specific, runs monthly walks and socials; it sells memberships, and we didn’t find the price. Our sober queer spaces guide has more, and the recovery meetings guide has meetings.
If You’re Over 40
Austin Prime Timers is a social club for “mature gay, bisexual, and trans men,” mostly 40 to 80-plus, and younger men 21 and up are welcome. It meets the second Sunday of the month from 3:30 to 5 PM, and visitors can come, but there’s no meeting in November, and the club says December’s details go up around December 1. Dues are $30 a year.
Rainbow Connections ATX, a program of Family Eldercare, runs, in its words, “potlucks, storytelling events, dances and more” for LGBTQIA2+ older adults and allies. In November 2026 it started Rainbow Table, a free lunch with arts and crafts, talks on aging well and drag bingo, open to anyone 60 and up: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11 AM to 1 PM, at Lyons Gardens, 2720 Lyons Rd. GenX Lavender Girls, above, is for women born 1964 to 1980. We found fewer in-person options for older lesbians; our guide to meeting older gay men and women says what we did find.
If You Just Moved Here
The upRising Meetup group, above, asks, “New to the area? Want to make new friends?” Austin doesn’t have an LGBTQ+ community center yet (here’s where the plan stands), so there’s no single drop-in night. Our guide to events by day of the week lists what happens each night, and our neighborhoods guide covers where queer Austin lives. If you want a peer support group, our support groups guide lists them.
If Money’s Tight
Free, by the organizers’ own pages: Front Runners’ weekly runs, the Little Gay Book Club, the library’s Reading the Rainbow and Queer Dharma. Prime Timers is $30 a year. Both choirs say dues shouldn’t keep you out and offer help with them.
Want the Same Few People Every Week?
Queer Austin runs Community Circles, a small, peer-led weekly circle for LGBTQIA+ adults. The first circle starts in early 2027. If none of the groups above fits, or you’d like a small group that stays the same each week, the Community Circles page has the interest list.
Before You Go
- Check the group’s own page or calendar the week you go. Dates move around holidays, and some groups take a month off.
- RSVP where the group asks. Several share the address only after you sign up on Partiful or Meetup.
- Going alone? Message the organizer and ask who to look for when you get there.
- Ask about access: parking, steps, restrooms and how loud the room gets.
- Running in winter? Front Runners suggests a headlamp for evening runs.
What We Couldn’t Check
- What these groups are like in person. We didn’t attend any of them
- Where STRUT starts and where Local Queer’s game night meets; both are shared after an RSVP
- Membership prices for the Austin Tennis Club and The Unbuzzed Club
- Spring 2027 audition dates for the Austin Gay Men’s Chorus, which weren’t posted yet
Last checked: November 2026. Each group’s own page, calendar or listing read on November 1, 2026. The friendship figures come from the University of Kansas’s 2018 release on Jeffrey Hall’s study. See how we choose what goes on a list.
How We Check
We check every business and group we name against what it publishes about itself: its own site, its booking page, or its state license. No business pays to be in a guide, and we don’t earn a commission when you book.
The full method is on How We Choose. If something here is wrong or out of date, send a correction.
