How to Meet Older Gay Men and Women in Austin

Austin has two long-running groups for older LGBTQ+ people. Austin Prime Timers is a social club for gay, bi, and trans men, with members from 40 to 80 and up, that has met since 1989. Rainbow Connections ATX runs walks, Zoom teas, and outings for LGBTQ+ older adults of every gender. Meals on Wheels also runs a senior center for LGBTQ+ seniors in South Austin. For older lesbians and queer women, we found fewer in-person options, and we say below what we did find.

For Gay, Bi, and Trans Men

Austin Prime Timers

Prime Timers describes itself as “a social organization that provides mature gay, bisexual, and trans men with opportunities to come together in a safe and supportive atmosphere to develop friendships.” Members range from 40 to 80 and up, with an average age in the mid-60s, and younger men 21 and over are welcome. The club says it has 200 members and was founded in 1989.

Beyond the monthly meeting, members do restaurant dinners and potlucks at members’ homes, happy hours, bridge and other card games, theater and museum trips, and volunteer work for the Hill Country Ride for AIDS and a food bank.

• Meetings: the second Sunday of most months, 3:30 to 5 PM; visitors welcome. The October 2026 meeting was at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 2140 Allendale Rd, Austin 78756, so confirm the venue on the site. The site says there’s no meeting in November 2026

For Every Gender

Rainbow Connections ATX

Rainbow Connections ATX, a program of the nonprofit Family Eldercare, works to improve “the quality and vitality of life for LGBTQIA2+ older adults by providing connections, support, and advocacy in the greater Austin area.” It grew out of Austin Gay & Lesbian Senior Services and the Austin LGBT Elder Task Force, which merged in 2022. Many of its events are open to LGBTQIA2+ people and allies from 18 to 110.

Its calendar has a monthly walk and a monthly online social, plus outings and Pride tables:

• Monthly Qmmunity Walk: the third Wednesday of the month, 7 to 8 PM at Mueller Lake Park (next: October 21 and November 18, 2026). Meet near the restrooms; the loop is about 2.6 miles at a strolling pace, mostly crushed gravel
• Monthly Zoom Tea Social: online, 7 to 8 PM. The next one listed is October 29, 2026
• Outings: small group trips and classes. October 2026 had a museum tour of the bat exhibit at the Texas Science & Natural History Museum, limited to eight people and registered by email, and a class on AI with AGE of Central Texas
• Pride tables: at area Pride events. Next are Georgetown Pride on October 17 and Pflugerville Pride on November 8, 2026

Golden Generation at upRising Church

upRising Church in South Austin invites “all people 60+” to its Golden Generation program on Mondays and Wednesdays, for socializing, activities, presentations and a lunch from Meals on Wheels. The church calls it “the first of its kind for LGBTQ seniors and their friends and allies.” Meals on Wheels Central Texas lists the same site among its senior centers, described as “Programs and support for LGBTQ+ seniors and allies.”

For Older Lesbians and Queer Women

We looked hardest here and found the least. Austin doesn’t have an in-person club for older lesbians that posts a regular schedule the way Prime Timers does for men. Rainbow Connections ATX, above, is open to women and runs the most regular in-person events we found. A book club is another low-pressure way in: our guide to queer bookstores and book clubs lists free monthly ones, including two at the Austin Public Library.

Conscious Lesbians 60+ (Online)

This weekly online group is for “long-time lesbians, women new to being out, and everything in between, from ages 60s-80s,” including singles, widows, and partnered women. It’s run by the Conscious Girlfriend Academy and listed on an Austin Meetup page, but it meets on Zoom and members come from many places. The group calls itself “trans-affirming.”

• When: weekly, online. Sessions were on Thursdays at noon Central when we checked; the Meetup page has the next one
• Cost: a monthly membership; the price isn’t on the page we read. You can try it free after a short intake call

If you came out later in life, the same group runs online classes for women coming out in their 40s and beyond.

If You’re Living With HIV

Vivent Health’s Austin clinic runs Golden Survivors, which it describes as “a closed psychosocial support group designed for individuals living with HIV who are 55 and older.” To ask about joining, Vivent says to contact its behavioral health team; the clinic is at 104 E Highland Mall Blvd, Suite 100, (512) 458-2437. Before You Go

• First visit: ask the organizer whether there’s someone who greets new people. Prime Timers says its general meeting is a good way to get acquainted. If walking in cold is hard, volunteering gives you a job to do while you meet people; our volunteering guide lists six LGBTQ+ groups with sign-up pages
• Cost: ask about dues or event fees, and whether there’s help if money is tight
• Getting there: ask about parking, stairs, and whether the venue is on a bus route
• Accessibility: if you use a mobility aid or need a quieter setting, ask ahead. For its museum trip, Rainbow Connections asked people to put accommodation requests in their RSVP email
• Privacy: Rainbow Connections posts event photos on its site. If you’re not out everywhere, ask before the camera comes out

What We Couldn’t Check

We didn’t attend any of these groups, so nothing here is a first-hand review. Schedules come from each group’s own page and change often, especially around holidays. The older version of this page listed the Austin LGBT Coalition on Aging; its website no longer works, and we couldn’t confirm the group is still active. TGQ Social, which it also mentioned, is a social for trans and gender-diverse people and posts two dates a month on its Meetup page.
