Have you ever wondered where gay cowboys in Austin go for a drink? I hate to break it to you, but there still aren’t any gay country bars in this town. I know, it’s a tragedy. What Austin does have is queer two-step and line dance nights at Sagebrush, a South Congress honky-tonk, most Monday nights, with free lessons for beginners and a live country band.
That’s the short answer, checked in October 2026. Our How We Choose page explains how we check listings.
Queer Country Nights by Neon Rainbows
Neon Rainbows calls itself “the longest-running source for Queer Country in Texas,” and has been throwing queer country parties in Austin since 2012. Its founder told the Austin Free Press in 2025 that it “began as a homage to the culture of gay country western bars of the 80s and 90s.” Today it runs two kinds of Monday night at Sagebrush, plus parties at other venues.
Queer Two-Step Night at Sagebrush
Neon Rainbows’ event page for the night says, “No experience necessary. No partner necessary either! Bring friends or come solo.” Two-step lessons start at 7:15 and 7:45 PM, a live band plays at 8:30, and there’s social dancing in between for people who already know how.
- Where: Sagebrush, 5500 S Congress Ave, Austin 78745
- When: most Mondays, 7 to 11 PM. Next: October 19 and October 26, 2026
- Cost: $10 at the door, cash only. 21 and up
- Dates and bands: Neon Rainbows events

BRONCO Queer Line Dance Night
Line dancing doesn’t need a partner. BRONCO nights at Sagebrush are billed for “Absolute Beginners” on some Mondays and “All Levels” on others.
- When: the first Monday of the month for absolute beginners, plus some all-levels Mondays, 7 to 11 PM. Next: November 2, 2026
- Cost: $10. 21 and up
Other Neon Rainbows Nights
Neon Rainbows also runs STAMPEDE, a queer line dance party at The Highball on a Friday most months. The next one is October 30, 2026, ticketed and 21+. It adds seasonal parties too, such as a winter formal and a Christmas drag show at Sagebrush. Its events page has the dates.
Two-Step and Line Dance Lessons
Nico Osier, who runs Country Fried Dance, teaches line dancing and two-step around Austin and at Neon Rainbows events. Nico writes, “I use gender neutral lead/follow language,” and says dancers with mobility devices are welcome. The Austin Free Press covered Nico’s classes at Sagebrush in July 2025.
- Schedule: Nico keeps a public Google Calendar of classes, linked from the site

Neon Rainbows’ two-step lessons are taught by Cowpoke Movement, which has also run Saturday afternoon queer two-step workshops on the Neon Rainbows calendar, most recently in September 2026.
Gay Rodeo
The Texas Gay Rodeo Association has an Austin chapter, listed by the International Gay Rodeo Association with a post office box and the phone number 512-415-8560. We couldn’t find a current Austin event schedule on a page we could read; the chapter posts on Facebook.
Before You Go
- Cash: Queer Two-Step Night is cash only at the door
- ID: the Neon Rainbows nights we list are 21 and up
- Going solo: the two-step night says you don’t need a partner, and line dancing doesn’t use one
- Leading and following: if you’ve never danced, ask the teacher how they handle lead and follow. Country Fried Dance says it uses gender-neutral terms
- Getting home: Sagebrush is on South Congress, south of Ben White Boulevard. Ask about parking, and plan a ride home if you’re drinking
What We Couldn’t Check
We haven’t been to these nights, so nothing here is a first-hand review. Dates come from the organizers’ own pages, read October 12 and rechecked October 14, 2026, and dance nights change bands and dates often. Sagebrush’s own calendar didn’t list these nights when we checked, so go by the Neon Rainbows calendar. The 2023 version of this page said some gay bars host country nights; we couldn’t find a current one, so we took that out. For the bars themselves, see our guide to Austin’s gay bars.
